Are you in the process of remodeling your kitchen but don’t know whether you want a peninsula or a kitchen island? Are you still a little unclear about the difference between the two?

We’ll help you understand the differences below, and you may feel informed enough to start making a decision. If you need more help, call our contractors, and we’ll be happy to get started on your consultation.

Which One Is Which?

Just think geographically! A peninsula is a piece of land that is joined to a mainland but touches water on three sides. A peninsula in your kitchen is a large area extending from the cabinetry and cupboards. A peninsula is connected to the wall and cabinets with at least one side, but the rest of it is out in the open. It can be used in multiple ways such as an extra work space or just simply an area where you can socialize with friends.

It serves the same purpose as a kitchen island but the structure is different. An island is seen as a separate unit whereas the peninsula is connected to the rest of your kitchen. So when you are choosing between the two, you must decide whether the layout of your kitchen is more suited to a connecting structure or a freestanding structure in the middle of the room.

If you are trying to decide whether to get an island or a peninsula just look at the size of your kitchen. If your kitchen is a smaller kitchen you’re better off going with a peninsula. If it is a bigger kitchen and you want the extra storage and extra work place than the island is a better fit for you.
