If you are trying to decide what type of countertops to add onto the top of your cabinets, we have just the guide for you. Two of the most common materials used for counters, especially in kitchens, are quartz and granite. But which one is right for you? And what’s the difference between the two?

Granite is produced by the earth and it is mined as a single big sheet. No two sheets will look the same due to the natural markings they gather in the earth. Quartz countertops, on the other hand, are manufactured. Quartz is crushed and traditionally mixed with resin and or other binding agent. However, quartz countertop is designed to look as though it came right from the earth and often given natural features that resemble granite.

Take a look at some of the pros and cons of each material to help you decide which is right for your kitchen remodel.

Granite

Pros- The natural appearance of granite is appealing to many, and it may add value to your home. It is very a very strong mineral, and it is very common for granite countertops to last up to 50 years without a scratch. Of course, it all depends on how well you maintain it.

Cons- Despite its durability, granite may chip if, for example, a heavy pan drops down from above. Because it is porous, you may need to reseal your granite countertops every year or every few years. While some people like that you cannot find two slabs that look alike, others desire consistency with their kitchen designs, so granite may not be right for everyone.

Quartz

Pros- Quartz requires less maintenance than granite, aside from regular cleaning. And many people prefer quartz because they can get the same pattern throughout the kitchen, rather than a natural slab patterned at random by the earth. Quartz is less likely to chip and is more flexible than granite, so it is easier to install.

Cons- The only downfall to having quartz in your kitchen is that if the sunlight hits the countertop directly it may stain.
