A bathroom remodel is a complicated job that doesn’t always go as planned, but the end result is worth it if you can push past the unexpected frustrations and trust your contractor to get the job done. While it’s important to plan as much as you can for a remodel, we know from experience that the project can stray a little bit from the original intention. We’ve put together this list so that homeowners can prepare to expect the unexpected when remodeling a bathroom.

  • It’s tough to get the lighting just right. The lighting deserves a lot of focus when it comes to remodeling a bathroom. You may not be prepared to focus so much attention on a seemingly minor portion of your bathroom, but poor lighting can mean an all-around unpleasant experience if shadows are cast on your face during a morning grooming routine or while shaving.
  • A functional bathroom may not be the bathroom of your dreams. When it comes to space, you have to be realistic about what can and what cannot be realistically accomplished. A large spa-style tub is not ideal for a small bathroom, especially since it will not be used every day in most cases. Instead, focus your attention on the details of your average-sized shower and tub, such as water-efficient showerheads and elegant tiles.
  • It may take a lot longer than you expect. Often, remodeling a bathroom involves more work than you initially plan for. This is especially true if you decide to take the plunge and replace all of the piping and fixtures as well. This is a good decision if you have older pipes and fittings that could corrode in only a short time. Additionally, it’s not uncommon for contractors to find significant water damage during a remodel, or for other issues to come up that delay the remodeling and renovation process. Our advice? Relax, and trust your contractor to do the work thoroughly rather than attempting to rush through or take it on as a DIY project.
