The first meeting with a contractor can be a little bit scary when you don’t know what to expect. But don’t worry; your contractor is used to a wide range of customers, from the over prepared to those who have no idea where to start. However, being prepared can make the job go more smoothly. We offer a few tips on what to do before meeting with a contractor here.

Be as prepared as possible

We understand that you might not have everything ready to go for your contractor—and that’s okay. However, the better prepared you are, the more smoothly the meeting will go, and the more accurate your price estimate can be. Before you meet:

  • Check magazines and other resources and collect images that you feel represent your dream space.
  • Prioritize what’s most important to you, so that your contractor knows where the major expenses will be.
  • Think about the details. The more you know about flooring, windows, lighting, and other details, the more accurate your quote will be.
Prepare for building permits

You can call your contractor for some guidance on this, but keep in mind that the job cannot begin until you have obtained the proper building permits. Will you have to do this yourself? Or can your contractor do it for you? Will you need to have blueprints finished first? These are all things to research that could speed along the process.

Find the right contractor for the job

The right contractor has an expansive portfolio that represents the type of work you want to see in your home. The right person will have several years of experience, a full team to work on your home, plenty of available time for your remodel, and all of the right licensing. Ask friends for referrals, talk to your neighbors, and check online resources. And don’t be afraid to call around to several contractors to make sure they see eye to eye. Having the right contractor is key to seeing that the job goes smoothly!
