When it comes to kitchen remodeling in Brentwood CA, there are many currently popular styles with eye-catching looks. You only have to flip through a magazine or scroll online through hundreds and hundreds of remodeled and new kitchens to see the array of options.

Open shelving is an attractive kitchen remodeling trend. This design removes the standard cupboards and puts the storage of the kitchen on full display. The open shelving kitchens you’ll see on lifestyle websites and in magazines won’t tell you the full story of what this design can mean and work in practicality. Let’s take a closer look at what’s good about open shelving—and what might be not-so-good.

The Good!
  • Show off your design: Without cupboards blocking the way, a kitchen can show off its design and especially the wall material. If you’re planning to spend money on attractive wall materials like marble and granite, or you want a beautiful and colorful tile design, open shelving lets your kitchen truly strut.
  • Easy access: It takes only a second to reach for any item you need for working in the kitchen. You don’t even have to look around hard to find what you want, opening one cabinet after the other.
  • Use storage items as decor: If you have beautiful cookware, dishes, and utensils that work as both decor and tools, open shelving gives you an entirely new way to decorate. For people who love quality cookware, beautiful mugs, glasses, and bowls, and shiny pots and pan, open shelving can be gorgeous.
  • Easy cleaning: Open shelving invites you to use the utensils and cookware more often, so they won’t simply gather dust. Wiping down the shelves is quick and easy.
The Not-So-Good
  • Clutter: You need to pay close attention to how you place and organize items on open shelves, otherwise you’ll soon have a cluttered and disorganized look that makes the kitchen appear messy. Sometimes it’s good to have cupboard doors you can close on a tightly packed storage space.
  • You can see everything: If you have only the most pleasing appearing cookware and appliances and utensils, great! But open shelves hide nothing, and maybe you don’t want to keep that old reliable blender just sitting out in the open. Or that set of inexpensive plastic cups you get a lot of use out of but which just look distracting when everyone can see them.
  • The dust invasion: Open shelving is easier to clean … but it also gets dusty and dirtier quicker. You’ll need to pay more attention to your dusting and cleaning. You may pull down a pan to use for cooking to discover that it already needs cleaning from collecting dust.
  • It looks bad with poor material: The ability to show off more of the kitchen may not be something you want if you’re using less expensive material.

You may already know if you’re the kind of person who would enjoy an open shelving-concept kitchen. You don’t have to commit to open shelving for the whole kitchen either, but only one section. This is a good middle-ground for many. Talk to our design/build team to find out the best style for your kitchen remodel.
