One of the most common trends in kitchen remodeling is the island. This additional kitchen structure can benefit you in many ways when it comes to cooking and entertaining guests, but it may not be a good choice in every home. Read on to find out what makes a kitchen island such an ideal addition for many—and why it’s not always the best idea.

The Benefits of a Kitchen Island

The main advantage to adding a kitchen island is the amount of space it frees up for you to work with. The counter space in your kitchen is limited, and it is likely disrupted by your appliances and countertop display pieces (your microwave oven or your spice rack, for example, tend to get in the way). Here are a few additional uses for a kitchen island, which can help you use your time in the kitchen efficiently.

  • Seat Guests
  • Use for Serving Meals
  • Prepare Food
  • Store Kitchen Supplies
  • Add an Extra Range
  • Add a Sink for Food Preparation
  • Supplement Your Decor
Space Is Everything: When an Island Is the Wrong Choice

While a kitchen island gives you more counter space, it also takes away a lot of the space you need to move around. If you have a smaller kitchen and you are not considering expanding, a kitchen island may not be right for your remodel. The ability to get from the stove to the refrigerator to the kitchen table with ease and to allow people to walk past may be a lot more important.

While a kitchen island does add some space to work on, it’s not the only way to gain additional storage and countertop area. A built in microwave or a wall-mounted spice rack can easily free up a large part of your counter space. And if you are worried about storage, focus on this in different ways during your remodel, such as adding floor-to-ceiling cabinets or additional pull out drawers.
