We’re in the last month of 2020. It’s been a difficult year for most people, full of numerous challenges. For many, these challenges were centered around their homes, which saw a complete change of how much they’re used. Activities from outside the house shifted inside—work the most notable. If you’re like many homeowners, you probably came to look at your house much differently in 2020 than ever before.

Next year will be different, and you’re likely already looking forward to making changes or getting a fresh start. A remodeling contractor in Los Angeles, CA can help you put into place plans for your house that will help with that fresh start, and you probably already have some ideas for what changes you want based on your experiences during a difficult 2020. Below are a few remodeling ideas that make sense for the upcoming year.

The home office

We’d wager the home office addition or room conversion will be the top remodeling project across the country during 2021. More people are working from home now than ever before, and many will probably continue to do so. Making the shift to working from home can be difficult if there isn’t a dedicated space to help with work/life balance—doing everything from the kitchen counter just isn’t the most productive way to manage your job! You can create a home office through a room conversion, such as a guest bedroom or an unused game room, or do a half-garage conversion. If you have the space, you can do the home office as a room addition.

The open-air transition room

We’ve talked before about “The California Room,” which is an open air transition room that is like a covered porch with more amenities. This year was one in which many activities needed to be shifted outdoors for health reasons, and that’s not always easy, even in California weather. Creating transition rooms allows for more “outdoor” activities that don’t have the drawbacks of weather exposure. If you discovered you enjoy outdoor entertaining, but want more options during the year for it, a transition room is an excellent choice for a remodel.

Bring in the light

Did you discover, once you were staying home more often than ever, that your house is often too dark inside? This isn’t conducive to a positive atmosphere, and we predict that a new trend in remodeling for 2021 will be to bring more outside light into homes. This can be with more windows, with skylights, or even with a bump-out that draws in light from two extra directions.

The multi-use space

You may already think of many rooms in your house as multi-use … except they probably weren’t originally designed that way. You’ve just had to adapt to the multi-uses. Why not remodel with an eye toward multiple uses? If you don’t have the space to put in a dedicated home office or do a full room conversion, there are ways to remodel existing rooms for a better work and home life balance. Sometimes it can be as basic as reworking the storage system.

Our designers can help you discover the best remodeling ideas for your home in 2021. Schedule an appointment and we’ll get you started for the new year.
